Common Misunderstandings

Equitable partnership: the test is whether they could say no

Agreement given by someone who cannot afford to refuse is not agreement, and it is easy to mistake for it.

Equitable partnership: the test is whether they could say no

Every guideline on equitable partnership eventually reduces to one test: could your partner have said no to this?

If refusing would have cost them funding, equipment access, or a future collaboration they need, then their agreement tells you nothing — and it is very easy to mistake that agreement for endorsement.

Checking your own partnership

  • Did they shape the research question, or respond to yours?
  • Do they control any part of the budget?
  • Do they lead any output?
  • Do they hold the data independently?
  • Has anything changed because of something they raised?
  • The last question is the most diagnostic.

Practices that build equity

  • Involve partners at proposal design, not at implementation.
  • Fund local staff time properly rather than assuming it.
  • Give partners their own budget lines to administer.
  • Assign at least one output for them to lead.
  • Ensure data is held on both sides from the start.

Practices that undermine it

  • Bringing a fully designed protocol and asking for implementation.
  • Treating local knowledge as context rather than as expertise.
  • Publishing without local co-authors in lead positions on any paper.
  • Leaving with the data and no continuing access for partners.

Capacity building that is real

  • Funded and scheduled, not incidental to other work.
  • Chosen by the partner based on what they want to build.
  • Includes people who stay, not only those who go abroad.
  • Leaves working equipment with maintenance provision.
  • Training that serves only your project is not capacity building.

Asking for feedback honestly

  • Direct questions to a funder-dependent partner will get polite answers.
  • Use a third party or an anonymous route where the stakes are real.
  • Ask what you should do differently next time, specifically.
  • Then change something visible, or the question was theatre.

One thing worth remembering

Ask yourself: has anything about this project actually changed because of something the partner raised?

If nothing has, in three years of collaboration, then either they have raised nothing — which tells you they do not feel able to — or they have raised things that went nowhere. Both answers point to the same conclusion.

Câu hỏi thường gặp

What is the core test of an equitable partnership?

Whether the partner could have said no — if refusing would cost them funding, equipment access or a needed future collaboration, their agreement tells you nothing.

How do you check your own partnership?

Ask whether they shaped the research question, control any budget, lead any output, hold the data independently, and whether anything changed because of something they raised.

Which practices build equity?

Involving partners at proposal design, funding local staff time properly, giving partners their own budget lines, assigning at least one output for them to lead, and holding data on both sides.

What counts as real capacity building?

Funded and scheduled rather than incidental, chosen by the partner, including people who stay rather than only those who go abroad, and leaving working equipment with maintenance provision.

How should feedback be sought honestly?

Through a third party or anonymous route where stakes are real, asking specifically what to do differently next time — and then changing something visible.
